Yoga Columbia South Carolina

Hi, I’m Taylor.

Hi, I’m Taylor. I’m a 200hr registered yoga teacher from Columbia, SC. My teaching foundations are based in Hatha and Restorative yoga, focusing on postural alignment and injury-prevention.

I fell in love with yoga ten years ago while playing collegiate volleyball at UNC Chapel Hill. Hatha and Restorative yoga was a staple in our strength and conditioning program, and I immediately noticed the physical and mental benefits it offered. Not only did this once a week practice help keep my body mobile and injury-free, but it also encouraged me to clear my mind for 60 minutes in an otherwise chaotic week.

Since being exposed to yoga all those years ago, I never stopped practicing. I took yoga with me as I played professional volleyball overseas and well into my corporate career. For me, yoga has helped reduce feelings of burnout, keeps my anxiety in check, and supplements my fitness routine quite nicely.

With over ten years of yoga experience, I’m honored that I can now share this sacred and transformational practice with my community in my hometown of Columbia, SC.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha yoga is a traditional branch of yoga that focuses on physical postures, breath work, and meditation to encourage physical strength, mobility, and mental clarity. Hatha yoga is widely practiced and often serves as a foundation for other yoga styles. It typically involves a series of asanas (poses) and pranayama (breathing exercising) to balance the body and mind. The aim of a Hatha yoga practice is to create physical, mental, and spiritual harmony within oneself.

What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative yoga is known for its calming and healing effects on both the body and mind. It’s slower and gentle pace is often used to alleviate the effects of chronic stress. Restorative yoga is also known to improve sleep quality, aid in injury recovery, and help reduce symptoms of some mental illnesses like depression or anxiety.

What can you expect in a yoga class lead by me?

Well, that depends! If you’re taking a Hatha class with me, we will likely target a specific area of the body. Many of my classes focus on opening and strengthening the hips, lower back, core, shoulders, and chest.

At the beginning of class, I’ll ask you to clear your mind and take several grounding breaths. You’ll be cued to mindfully return to your breath throughout class to promote connection to the present moment, even as we’re flowing through more challenging postures. At the beginning of class, we’ll perform gentle movements to awaken the body. From there, we’ll build heat by activating the muscles we want to focus on during our flow— which will target those specific muscles and increase in difficulty as class progresses. Afterwards, we’ll cool down with some nice restorative poses and lengthening stretches before surrendering to Savasana— our final state of rest in which I’ll often guide you through a meditation.

Restorative classes are very similar, but we’ll move at a much slower pace and use tools like blocks, bolsters, and blankets and stretch and massage the deep muscles of the body.

At the end of class you’ll likely feel peaceful, physically restored, strong, and clear-minded. The effects of a single yoga class can last for days, but a consistent practice will lead to physical, mental, and spiritual transformation that can last a lifetime.
